White-Water Rafting

Famed for its jungle trekking, breathtaking scenery and wildlife, it's easy to forget that Sumatra is also very well-known for its white-water rafting; in fact 2001 saw Indonesia host the International White-water Rafting Championships.

For the experienced white-water rafters among you, it's possible to spend three or four days on the Asahan River near Lake Toba. It's a Grade 5&6 river that is no stranger to international competitions. This is a remote and truly wild area of Sumatra; accommodation and food is provided while there.

The less experienced rafter can still have some white-water action on the Wampu river near Bukit Lawang. It's possible to take a day-long trip down the river, stopping off at hot-springs and a waterfall for lunch. It's great fun, and one of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of Sumatra.

Both rivers can also be kayaked, although experience will be required.
