Maimoon Palace

If you’re at a loose end for an hour or so in Medan then you could certainly do worse than to take a turn around Istana Maimoon, the former residence of the Sultan of Deli. It was built in 1888 by the Royal Dutch Indies Army in a mixture of European and Arabian styles and resembles something out of A Thousand and One Nights.

The palace is predominantly yellow as this is the colour of the Royal House of Deli and is beautifully tiled on the inside. There are various old photographs adorning the walls and you can see the throne upon which the Sultan presisded over his court.

Somehow the Sultan survived the revolution of 1946 and his family still live in the wings of the palace, meaning that there is only a small part of Istana Maimoon which is open to the public.
