Ketembe

Ketembe tends to get over-looked and over-shadowed by its more accessible rival, Bukit Lawang. Situated thirty kilometres north of the closest town of any signifcance, Kutacane, it takes at least seven hours to get there by public bus from Medan. It's an atrocious road through some wonderful scenery and once there, all of Gunung Leuser National Park lies open to you.

The village itself is tiny with no facilities other than a few guesthouses but it is from here that you can organise hiking trips into the jungle and catch sight of wild orang-utans rather than the tame ones found near Bukit Lawang; also rafting, tubing and kayaking Please see the information on Gunung Leuser National Park for details on the many other kinds of wildlife that can be found here.
